There are plenty of restaurants to try on Shamian Island. Lucy's caters to the American crowd, with sure fire favorites like grilled cheese sandwiches and hot spiced smoked squid. Actually, Dyanne and I liked the smoked squid, though the waitress did her best to talk us out of that choice. She said that "most foreigners don't like it." I don't know why. Yes, it was dry & stringy, but had a nice flavor & only somewhat rubbery texture.
I tried San Miguel beer at Lucy's for the first time, and was pleasantly surprised at the good flavor (goes well with smoked squid).
Dyanne and I went to a Thai restaurant called Thai Ox & Bridge. Excellent menu, and good tasting food.
You can get such yummies as:
Roast pig neck's meat
Dyanne got some chicken Satay and a noodle dish, and I got a nice spicy eel & veggie hotpot.
After eating Thai food, we stopped by Sherry's Place, which is an excellent shop for all sorts of "stuff." We had a chop made for Zoe. A chop is basically an engraved stone stamp, dipped in ink, then pressed to a document to "sign" it. Similar things are still used in Japan.
Thai dried meat floss roll
Steamed goose's hand & vermicelli
Citronella Shrimp
(remember that Citronella is the herb used in non-DEET mosquito repellants for kids - YumYumYum!)
Chicken Satay - not spicy at all
Eel Hotpot with plenty of nice spicy peppers
You can get them with zodiac animals (Zoe is a Monkey - go figure!), or plain.
They're typically carved onsite.
A closeup of Zoe's chop. It's got ZOE on top, plus the Chinese characters for Gui Yu Guang below.
